Where are the boys in climate action? How to break the bubbles and join forces

Young people are vital agents for a just green transition, but participation varies across social identities and backgrounds. Men and boys tend to be less interested in both sustainability and gender equality compared to women and girls. How can we strengthen the conscious and committed, while also bringing underrepresented voices to the table?

On 28 August at 13.00-14.30 (CEST), we hosted a webinar exploring the trends and patterns of youth engagement and commitment to climate action. What keeps boys and other underrepresented groups from getting involved – and what attracts them? How can we build inclusive and diverse movements?

These are some of the questions that was discussed with the launch of a new report written by NIKK in collaboration with Nordregio for Sustainable Living. NIKK took the stage to offer key insights on how we can approach inclusivity and diversity based on interviews with Nordic youth organisations.

Ungdomsbarometern joined in the studio to present interesting data over time from conducting the biggest annual youth studies in Sweden since the early 1990s. In recent years, their studies have shown a rapid downturn in Swedish youth who are interested in societal issues like sustainability and gender equality. How should we address this?

For the final half, a panel of Nordic youth representatives provided their views on all this and more. What challenges and solutions do they or the organisations see? Is there a trade-off between prioritising those who already care, and activating the less concerned?

Climate, Youth and Gender: Inclusion strategies for Nordic youth movements

This report analyses experiences of young people in Nordic nonprofit organisations from a gender and climate perspective. It identifies clear patterns and obstacles and considers key approaches to enabling more inclusive youth movements.
